Weymouth 2012 – Olympic Sailing Events and much more

The Weymouth and Portland Olympic sailing events are just over a year away at the time of writing and interest in the events is increasing by the day. The olympic events are sure to attract a large crowd to Weymouth and Portland, so if you are thinking of visiting the area as a sailing enthusiast then we have a selection of quality holiday cottages and apartments in the area that will help make your stay a memorable one. The Olympic events begin on the 29th of July 2012 and end on the 11th of August and we are already taking provisional booking on our portfolio of nearly 200 properties in the area.

Even if you are not mad keen on sailing as a pursuit, Weymouth has plenty to offer the curious and not so curious visitor. The Nothe Area of Weymouth is well worth a visit, especially as it is one of the few area of the town that has resisted modern redevelopment and kept a lot of its original charm and beauty. The flat top of the Nothe offers spectacular views across the bay and is open to the public for walking, dog walking, sunbathing, picnics, playing games etc. There is also the possibility that you could view some of the Olympic events from this gorgeous vantage point as well.

There is also Nothe Fort nearby (see left) which is located at the entrance to Weymouth harbour. It is set on three levels which are easily accessible by means of a lift and consists of a labyrinth of underground passages and outdoor areas with stunning views of the Jurassic coast.

Head west away from the fort and you will soon be upon the delightful Newton’s Cove where you can sit in beautiful natural surroundings and look out over Portland Harbour. The cove has sand, shingle and rock pools along with a small beach area that is regularly used by locals as well as tourists visiting the fort nearby.

If the quiet, understated appeal of Nothe and Newton’s Cove isn’t quite to your liking then the nearby bustling Old Harbour area with its wide selection of restaurants, refreshments and snack outlets might be more to your liking. From here you can head into the centre of the town and walk along the famous Esplanade and enjoy the funfair attractions and everything you might expect from the quintessential English seaside town.

No doubt the Olympics will leave a lasting impression on visitors to the town as well as the local residents. Hopefully, this impression will extend beyond the reach of the games themselves and remind the world that Weymouth is more than just an Olympic venue but a place with a lot more to offer than is immediately obvious. It is our aim to provide a lasting legacy of quality accommodation that brings visitors back year after year to this popular and bustling area of Dorset.
